Now that January is over and you promised yourself that you were going to do all these great things for your New Year’s Resolution like: Blog Everyday, Comment on Blogs, Create or Improve your Blog, Create or Improve your Fan Page, or (Fill in the Blank).  Are you happy with what you achieved?  Did you achieve any of the goals that you set out to do? I am asking myself these same questions.  It does not matter what level you are on in your business. You could always do better.

Below are some tips that you should implement for the rest of 2012:

1.   Dedicate 2-3 hours a day on income producing activities. They need to be things that will produce leads or drive traffic to your website, such as blogging, cutting videos, webinars, paid advertising, etc.  Do whatever your budget can afford, just remember to make the most of your time and money.  Also remember that once you get these leads to actually call them to enroll them in your primary business, affiliate program, or whatever you are promoting.

2.   Make sure you take out time to get your mind right! Even though friends and family mean well and think that they have your best interest at heart, they still can be very negative when it comes to your business.  That’s why it’s important to make sure that your listen to something inspirational everyday such as a wake up call that may be given by your favorite coach or marketing mastermind group.

3.   Stay connected with people that can help you get to the next level and actually follow their advice. Nothing upsets a coach more than a student that asks for help and then that student does not do a darn thing.  The coach is happy to get your money but is puzzled as to why you are not doing the things that your were told to do for success.

4.   There is never a perfect time to get started. A lot of times we put things off until we feel that they are just right.  Don’t worry about things being perfect!  Just start where you are right now and do continuous improvement as you go along.

5.   Don’t let the forces of evil take your attention away from your goals! What are the forces of evil? – Negative friends and family, Television (News, Reality Shows, Sit-Coms, etc), Radio (Listen to Success CDs instead of the “music” that are playing in the radio), Spending money on entertainment (Clubbing, Concerts, Movies, Going out to Dinner, Shopping, etc.).  I am not saying that you can never have any fun.  Just limit these thieves of your time and money.  Make sure that you are not letting these “fun” activities get in the way of building your business.  Get your work done first and then play.

Yes, January is gone but its not to late to make 2012 a banner year.  Get working on your goals now.  Don’t worry about 2013 sneaking up on you….You should start worrying now about Feb and March.  The end of the first quarter of the year will be here before you know it.  Let’s close out the quarter and the rest of the year on a good note!

So you are all excited about starting your blog but you don’t know what to do first.  It seems like such a daunting task but it is not as bad as you think.  Just follow these 10 easy steps and you should be on your way in no time!

1.  Choose a niche for your blog – This is very important.  It must be something that you and others are interested in if you are blogging for business.  If it is a subject that only you and a few others are interested in then it just a hobby for you and not a business.

2. Buy a domain name – Your domain could be related to what your blog is about (ex. www.birdwatching.com) or it can be your own name. For example – www.johndoe.com, www.askjanedoe.com, or www.workwithjanedoe.com. I recommend GoDaddy.com – World’s No.1 Domain Name Registrar for domain purchasing.

3. Choose a webhost - If you decide to use a self hosted platform like WordPress.org, then you need to find a reliable host that has all the services and capabilities that you need to host your blog.

4.  Choose your blogging platform – There are many free platforms out there like Blogger.com and Typepad, but if you want to have more control over your blog and have the most flexibility then I reccommend a self hosted platform like WordPress.org.

5. Choose a theme for your blog – You could use the one of the themes already available in to you from the blogging platform you choose or if you can purchase a custom theme.

6. Install plug ins – If you decide to use WordPress.org, you can improve your blog’s functionality by installing plug ins. You can install plug ins right from your dashboard if you are using WordPress 2.7 or higher.

6. Set up an email capture box – You want to know who is visiting your blog. Make sure that you place and opt in box for visitors to subscribe to your blog. Make sure to offer them something of value in exchange for their information. You can use an email service like Aweber to create an opt in box.

7. Write a few posts – After you set up your blog test it out. Write a few posts just to see how it looks with the theme that you have chosen. Make adjustments before you publicize your blog.

8. Create an external feed – Using a service like Feedburner.com will allow you to improve your understanding of your audiance and also improve your relationship with them.

9. Submit your feed to RSS feed directories and your blog to blog directories.

10. Visit other blogs in your niche and comment on some of the entries. Be sure to post a link to your blog after your comment.

Some blogs are here today and gone tomorrow. This is because the owners made some very critical mistakes. Below are some mistakes and solutions that you should take notice of in order to avoid failure.

Give Up Too Quickly On Your Blog

Blogs are not an overnight money maker. You can’t just blog for a month or two and expect to see big results. Many people give up after just 3 blog posts. Blogging is not that easy. Do at least 3 to 6 months of consistent blogging and you should see the results that you desire.

Hard Selling On Your Blog

Nobody is going to visit your blog just to be sold to.  There is nothing wrong with making money with your blog, but do not do it at the expense of your readers.  It is best to build up a loyal following and then make product suggestions.

Don’t Post Often Enough

There is nothing worse than visiting a blog where the last post was 18 months ago.  My recommendation is that you post at least once a week to your blog, although 2-3 times a week would be ideal.  Stop complaining that you don’t have enough time.  Just turn off the TV for one hour and just do it.

Talking Too Much About Yourself

Nobody cares what you had for dinner last night or what you did on vacation unless it ties in to what niche you are blogging about.  Always make sure that you are providing interesting content that your visitors want to read.  Try not to get too personal.

Don’t Promote Yourself and Your Blog

You could have the greatest blog in the world but it does not matter is no one is visiting it.  Take time to promote your blog  online and offline.  Take advatage of social media sites and list your blog in Blog Directories and add your RSS feed to Feed Directories.  Make sure that you advertise your Blog URL on your business cards also.  Join a Blog Carnival.

Starting A Blog On Something That You Are Not Passionate About

Confucious said that if you pick a job that you enjoy that you will never work a day in your life.  Blogging should be fun and enjoyable and not burdensome.  Make sure that you pick a niche that your are passionate about.  If you don’t your blogging will begin to be a chore for you and you will eventually stop caring and quit.

Unattractive or Hard to Read Template

Nothing turns readers off more than hard to read blog entries.  If  your template is unattractive or your font is in a strange and hard to read color, you may run your readers away with them never to return.  It is best to choose a clean template with a white background and black letters.

Avoid the above pitfalls and you should have a successful blog!

What is a blog?

A blog (comes from weblog) is a website consisting of entries (also called posts) that appear in reverse chronological order by day month and year with the most recent entry appearing first (similar in format to a diary or journal). Blogs typically include features such as comments and links to increase user interactivity. Blogs are created using specific publishing software. Blog writing style is usually informal. Blogs topics and be on anything you choose but most bloggers stick to a certain niche.

Top 7 Reasons To Create a Blog for Your Business

1. You will able to add content in minutes

You don’t have to go through the trouble of  uploading (FTP) files to your host like static sites. You can update your content from any computer as long as it has internet access.  This is great for when you have the next big idea.  You can easily log in to your admintration panel so that you post and let the world know.

2. It’s a Free (or Low Cost)

If you are on a budget, blogging is the way to go.  You can start your blog absolutely free at popular blogging sites such as blogger.com or wordpress.com. If your business name is available, you can use it as the  blog’s URL (web address). If you would like to purchase your business name’s domain, you can do so inexpensively from sites such as godaddy.com or register.com.  If you want a self host your blog then you can go Host Gator for hosting services.

3. It Makes You the Expert

You will become the go to person in your particular niche because you are showing your knowledge on various subjects when you post them to your blog.  Your visitors will appreciate when you post instructions, tips, how-to’s, and other articles which can establish you as an expert in your niche.  If you draw people in with content, you are more likely to sell any products or services that you are promoting because you have become a trusted source.

4. Create a relationship with visitors to your website

On a static website most visitors may visit once or twice but then they may never come back.  Because a blog is updated more often, visitors often return over and over again if you have good content.  This enables you to create a bond with your visitors.   You will be able to interact with your visitors by responding to the comments they leave on your blog.

5. Improve your search engine rankings

Search engines like Google and Yahoo love blogs because they are always trying to provide fresh content to their customers.  Since blogs are ever changing, they usually get better placement on the various search engines.

6. Make New Connections

A blog is a great tool to use for networking.   As people notice you on the internet, you will find that many will contact you to try to form a connection.  Also,  if you blog on a regular basis you will get the attention of other bloggers in your field.  These bloggers may end up being potential customers. These contacts are opportunities for you to meet people that you never would have come into contact with otherwise.

7. Blogs will help you get links

Drive more traffic to your blog by creating links on Social Media sites.  The more links you create then the more traffic your blog will receive.

All in all, blogging is a low cost way to get massive exposure for your business.  With all these benefits there is really no reason that you shouldn’t start blogging today!
